Numerical solution procedures for the morning commute problem

چکیده
This paper discusses solution techniques for the morning commute problem that is formulated as a discrete variational inequality (VI). Various heuristics have been proposed to solve this problem, mostly because the analytical properties of the path travel time function have not yet been well understood. Two groups of ‘‘non-heuristic’’ algorithms for general VIs, namely projection-type algorithms and ascent direction algorithms, were examined. In particular, a new ascent direction method is introduced and implemented with a heuristic line search procedure. The performance of these algorithms are compared on simple instances of the morning commute problem. The implications of numerical results are discussed. © 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Morning commute problem considering route choice, user heterogeneity and alternative system optima
This paper extends the bottleneck model to study congestion behavior of morning commute and its implications to transportation economics. The proposed model considers simultaneous route and departure time choices of heterogenous users who are distinguished by their valuation of travel time and punctual arrival. Moreover, two dynamic system optima are considered: one minimizes system cost in the...
متن کاملModeling the morning commute for urban networks with cruising-for-parking: An MFD approach
This study focuses on the morning commute problem with explicit consideration of cruising-for-parking, and its adverse impacts on traffic congestion. The cruising-for-parking is modeled through a dynamic aggregated traffic model for networks: the Macroscopic Fundamental Diagram (MFD). Firstly, we formulate the commuting equilibrium in a congested downtown network where travelers have to cruise ...
متن کاملP-stability, TF and VSDPL technique in Obrechkoff methods for the numerical solution of the Schrodinger equation
Many simulation algorithms (chemical reaction systems, differential systems arising from the modeling of transient behavior in the process industries and etc.) contain the numerical solution of systems of differential equations. For the efficient solution of the above mentioned problems, linear multistep methods or Runge-Kutta technique are used. For the simulation of chemical procedures the ra...
متن کاملAn L1-norm method for generating all of efficient solutions of multi-objective integer linear programming problem
This paper extends the proposed method by Jahanshahloo et al. (2004) (a method for generating all the efficient solutions of a 0–1 multi-objective linear programming problem, Asia-Pacific Journal of Operational Research). This paper considers the recession direction for a multi-objective integer linear programming (MOILP) problem and presents necessary and sufficient conditions to have unbounde...
متن کاملCOMPARING NUMERICAL METHODS FOR THE SOLUTION OF THE DAMPED FORCED OSCILLATOR PROBLEM
In this paper, we present a comparative study between the Adomian decomposition method and two classical well-known Runge-Kutta and central difference methods for the solution of damped forced oscillator problem. We show that the Adomian decomposition method for this problem gives more accurate approximations relative to other numerical methods and is easier to apply.
